ACTION SUMMARY

December 2021

[Action Dialogues]

Environment: for an inclusive transition

We look forward to 2022 to identify environmental public policy issues in Puerto Rico, framed around racial and gender inclusion.

Education: for a reflexion on power

During this year we’ll identify topics to deepen our understanding of the level of changes necessary to better Puerto Rico’s public education. The insights to define our advocacy will come from teacher, parent and student voices.

Housing: for a just recovery

During our last session, we talked to Rosanna Torres Pizarro, Senior Advisor for Puerto Rico at United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, about philanthropic sector concerns on accessing recovery and reconstruction federal funds.

New this year:

  • Member Brunches: monthly meetups in coffee shops to learn more about members’ current projects and their priority focus
  • Learning Journeys: quarterly site visits to learn from the edges of the system where solutions may be found
  • Dialogue Sessions: quarterly online conversations to deepen our understanding of topics and our philanthropic impact

Special
Projects

Robusteciendo la Justicia Social (Strengthening Social Justice)

A key component of the Robusteciendo la Justicia Social project is the self-diagnostics that participants must perform in order to better understand their organizations’ weaknesses, needs and opportunities. With this knowledge, this cohort will begin three years of grant deployment to develop & improve their organizations.

Following Ford Foundation’s Organizational Mapping Tool (OMT), facilitators, Kenia Colón and Maia Sherwood, gathered as many members from each organization as possible and guided them through discussions on various topics.

At the end of the self-assessment facilitation, participants had to reach a consensus on the top three priorities for each organization. The output of these discussions is confidential for each nonprofit to use as a guide to draw future plans.

FORWARD Puerto Rico Fund

We hosted a wonderful celebration of the fund’s impact with members and representatives of the 85 organizations that have benefited from the fund since its inception 5 years ago. The attendees were able to exchange experiences, share plans and explore future collaborations to continue moving Puerto Rico FORWARD.
