On the Ground Initiatives

Fundación Ángel Ramos

The Centro Maria Mazzarello ALESPI were awarded the prestigious Premio Tina Hills by the Fundación Ángel Ramos (FAR). The award is celebrating its 25th anniversary and, in celebration of this milestone, FAR has raised the prize for the winning organization to $200,000. The Centro Maria Mazzarello, Alespi, is a non-profit institution that emerged in 1987 as part of the commitment of the Salesian Sisters of Orocovis to the development of their community. After 35 years of working with communities in Orocovis, the center was recognized for their trajectory and work improving the quality of life of the people they serve.

Fundación Mujeres en Puerto Rico

Through the Community Investment Fund run by the Puerto Rico Community Foundation, the Red por los Derechos de la Niñez y la Juventud de Puerto Rico were able to secure a loan and a donation to acquire a solar microgrid that costs between $100,000 and $200,000, with storage to maintain the uninterrupted operation of Casa Ramón in Juncos, an independent housing program for vulnerable youth.

Liberty Foundation

Liberty Foundation continued their long lasting commitment of supporting community based organizations in Puerto Rico by distributing $650,000 to 29 local nonprofits. All of these organizations work with one of four of Liberty Foundation’s pillars: education, social wellbeing and health, arts and culture, and environmental protection. The donation came via their Golf Invitational Tournament, where seven nonprofits based on the USVI also received donations.

Hispanic Federation

Hispanic Federation’s $100,000 grant to Corporación Piñones Se Integra was highlighted in a New York Times article, explaining how the funds were used by the organization to form a mangrove reforestation initiative and cleanup efforts to improve water flow. The organization removed hundreds of tree branches, helping to prevent a lagoon from flooding.

Mellon Foundation / Flamboyán Arts Fund

The Flamboyan Arts Fund and the Mellon Foundation, have announced the second cohort of Letras Boricuas Fellows, which includes 20 Puerto Rican writers who will receive a $25,000 grant each to support their practice and writing. Going on its second year, the Letras Boricuas Fund has now awarded more than $1 million dollars to forty writers.

The Andrew Mellon Foundation

As part of its ongoing commitment to the arts and humanities sectors in Puerto Rico, the Mellon Foundation announced $10,150,000 in funding to support local organizations and initiatives following the devastation of Hurricane Fiona. In addition to that, Mellon has pledged a second round of recovery funding totaling more than $3 million, and more than $9 million in additional support for institutions including the University of Puerto Rico, Centro de Economía Creativa, El Ancón de Loíza, and others.

Fundación Puertorriqueña de las Humanidades

The Fundación Puertorriqueña para las Humanidades celebrated its first Fiesta de las Humanidades, a cultural event that celebrates thought, research, creativity, reading, and the sharing of diverse knowledge and ideas. The event counted with documentaries, readings, and other cultural presentations and activities.

Bezos Day One Fund

In an effort to combat homelessness in the most vulnerable communities of 24 municipalities around the island, Solo Por Hoy Inc. announced that it has received a $1 million grant from the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund — the largest private gift in the organization’s history.

Mark E. Curry Family Foundation

The Mark E. Curry Family Foundation recently held the “It’s time to help our kids” fundraising event through which eight Puerto Rico-based nonprofits received a total of $200,000 to strengthen their programs and ensure the continuity of their services to the community.

Calls for Submissions

Ford Foundation and the Flamboyán Arts Fund

The Ford Foundation and the Flamboyan Arts Fund have launched En Foco: Proyecto de Visibilización Cultural,” an open call for proposals to fund individuals and organizations that present creative and innovative projects aimed at amplifying the arts and culture in Puerto Rico.

With a $500,000 budget, “En Foco: Proyecto de Visibilización Cultural” will grant $50,000 – $100,000 to artists and organizations to develop and showcase their work within a two-year period.
