This event is exclusively for funders and grantmakers who are currently working on or interested in working in Puerto Rico. Please note that only those who have received an invitation or are current members are eligible to register.
Our convening is a 3-day experience for philanthropic leaders who want to develop and align strategies that pursue our differences as an opportunity to build an equitable Puerto Rico. By exploring our different perspectives, practices and priorities, we are able to not just strengthen our sector but also expand our ability to lead as a collective. We can lead in innovative ways that increase the impact of our investments when we combine our efforts and merge our paths. This annual event is a leadership development experience to expand our individual and collective visions of how to advance equity in creative ways.
What would it look like if you partnered with another foundation to invest in the same impact area? Could you implement new philanthropic practices if you leveraged the experience of another investor? Social change can be possible when many small actions, diverse ideas and contributions combine to fuel collective leadership. Are you ready to lead alongside your peers?
Transforming leadership into collective responsibility to create change on a bigger scale!

Peter Alfond's Grantee Prioritization Priorities

Kinyta Smalls
Executive Director PR, Peter Alfond Foundation
What I bring to IP: I am a lifelong learner, educator, and agent of change, bringing over 15 years of experience in bilingual education, a brief stint in mortgages and student loans, and over 25 years of mentorship and non-profit service through ministry and community service. Most recently, I worked in elementary education, developing departments dedicated to supporting English-language learners in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Camden, New Jersey schools. I became closely involved with all aspects of program development and training from the central office to the classroom, as well as in what became a new favorite thing: working with the local community and parents. I bring this passion for leveraging community partners and empowering local stakeholders to my current work at IP, and in particular to my role as Executive Director, Puerto Rico of the Peter Alfond Foundation. The Foundation’s goal to positively impact issues surrounding education and wellness give me a unique opportunity to work with local talent and community centered interests in Puerto Rico.
What I love most about my work: I love the challenge to consistently provide our clients with excellent work that is informed by a local context. IP’s’ team comprised of talented and thoughtful individuals support and challenge me to be consistent and thorough in this pursuit. At IP, the work of the team truly does add up to a quality body of work that is greater than each individual’s talent. Another aspect of the work that I enjoy is the opportunity to support the ideas and efforts of many Puerto Ricans investing in more equitable and sustainable practices that will improve upon the existing strengths and resources of the island and culture.
What I am most excited about learning right now: How the different leaders of social justice causes on the island of Puerto Rico bring to bear their communities’ assets in tackling complex challenges…oh, and how to sustain a high alkaline diet, while still having room for the occasional piece of fried chicken, pernil, or arroz con gandules.
What I do when I’m not working: Take long scenic walks; ride bikes with my husband; sit, read and think with a good cup of coffee in hand; reconnect with my family and former neighborhoods and friends in Puerto Rico; cook, and dance!
What my coworkers say about me: Kinyta has a knack for asking just the right question at just the right time. She is confident in her deep expertise yet humble in exploring new topics. Her work ethic and passion allow her to dive into any complex issue and resurface on the other side with digestible, actionable recommendations.

Filantropía Puerto Rico: Expanding Resources for the Ecosystem

Glenisse Pagán
Executive Director, Filantropía Puerto Rico

Karla Vargas
Director of Strategic Initiatives, Filantropía Puerto Rico
Karla, born and raised in Puerto Rico, has a solid background in the social sector, disadvantaged communities, public policy, and social project development. A bachelor’s degree in Social Work and a second concentration in interdisciplinary approaches to addictions from the University of Puerto Rico allowed her to learn firsthand how deficiencies in social reforms and development projects significantly deteriorate communities’ potential. She completed a master’s degree in Political and Corporate Communications in Spain, in addition to a Political Management concentration at the Graduate School of Political Management in Washington D.C., leading to an understanding that the most efficient way to impact and transform socioeconomic development is to identify the main channels and systems of communication between government, institutions and society, and the profound interrelationship between these three sectors.
As Karla’s vision of the three sectors grew, she recognized the opportunity to establish sustainable projects and public policies relevant to the needs of diverse populations and sectors; and the urgency to optimize, innovate and adjust existing tools to current realities. Her professional career has been developed in Puerto Rico, Washington and Spain in these sectors: social work; community organization; social impact; federal proposals and projects; social research; political campaigns and management; social, corporate and political communications;, public policy; technology; and social innovation.
To impact disadvantaged sectors, Karla founded KV Consultora Social, a think tank and consulting firm specialized in developing strategic projects focused on social impact, based on a framework of research, sustainability, social investment, and public policy. She is driven by what Eduardo Galeano rightly says, “[…] And, in the end, acting on reality and changing it, even a little, is the only way to prove that reality is transformable”.

Through this program, Richard became Data and Technology Officer for Filantropía Puerto Rico.
