[CAMs] Junte Virtual: "Desde la resistencia, la esperanza y la alegría".

En septiembre de 2022 recibimos el embate del Huracán Fiona en Puerto Rico. Una vez más, el Fondo ADELANTE Puerto Rico (Fondo ADELANTE) liderado por Filantropía Puerto Rico está presente en la respuesta al desastre y la recuperación de Puerto Rico. Reconocemos que la movilización de hoy viene desde mucho antes del 2017, y seguimos comprometidos con avanzar hacia un Puerto Rico mejor y más fuerte. 

El Fondo ADELANTE ha pasado los últimos cinco años apoyando a organizaciones sin fines de lucro claves en el sector social y a proyectos innovadores que abogan por abordar las crisis de forma equitativa, al mismo tiempo que aumenta la resiliencia de las poblaciones vulnerabilizadas en la isla.  Para continuar con este propósito, Diez Centros de Apoyo Mutuo (CAMs),  fueron intencionalmente seleccionadas para recibir esta subvención irrestricta, particularmente por su visión hacia avanzar equidad en Puerto Rico a través de la autogestión y el apoyo mutuo.

El 1ro de marzo de 2023 desde Filantropía PR, abrimos un espacio virtual para dar continuidad al fortalecimiento de las relaciones entre  los CAMs y para continuar aprendiendo cómo esta subvención ha apoyado a las organizaciones. La intención principal fue poder escuchar, aprender, generar confianza  y compartir el trabajo que cada una de las organizaciones participantes habían logrado para la equidad y la justicia social desde sus comunidades.

Quienes asistieron en representación de cada una de las organizaciones, que sostienen 9 Centros de Apoyo Mutuo en 8 municipios de Puerto Rico, nos sorprendieron con el avance de su trabajo. La conversación brotó alrededor de esta premisa: “Cuéntanos de un logro inesperado para el CAM que ocurrió en los pasados tres meses. ¿Qué ocurrió que no pensabas que se iba a lograr pero se pudo sacar adelante?”  Estas fueron algunas de sus respuestas:

  • CAM Las Carolinas en Caguas. Pudieron avanzar trabajos de rehabilitación de su infraestructura y expandir la cantidad de personas que sirven.
  • Comedores Sociales (CAM Caguas Pueblo): Lograron obtener legalmente el edificio donde se ubica su centro.
  • Mujeres Bartoleñas (CAM Jíbaro Bartolo en Lares). Rehabilitaron los espacios de vivienda de las mujeres que sirven.
  • CAM Jíbaro de Lares. Compraron un vehículo para apoyar a los agricultores y máquinas de coser para reivindicar la tradición de costura de las mujeres a las que sirven.
  • CAM Bucarabones en Las Marías. Ampliaron su oferta de servicios a las escuelas de Las Marías y añadieron talleres de fotografía a sus ofrecimientos.
  • Comité Desarrollo Villa Cañona (CAM Villa Cañona en Loíza).  Habilitaron un nuevo espacio para su Centro Tecnológico Comunitario y terminaron la cocina comunitaria de su Centro.
  • Apoyo Mutuo Agrícola. Comenzaron un agromercado en el pueblo de Río Piedras como parte de su esfuerzo colaborativo para revitalizar el casco urbano y para la venta de productos agrícolas de las fincas que apoyan en tres municipios del área noroeste.
  • Iniciativa de Ecodesarrollo de Bahía de Jobos (IDEBAJO en Salinas). Pudieron sacar un espacio para idear y crear nuevas respuestas para enfrentar próximos desastres en su comunidad.
  • Asociación de Comunidades Unidas a Través de la Acción Solidaria (ACUTAS en Toa Baja) Ampliaron su plan de resiliencia para las cuatro comunidades que atienden.

Este encuentro virtual ayudó a reconocer el trabajo incansable que cada una de estas organizaciones y personas realiza día tras día. Ahora nos toca continuar reflexionando cómo enfrentar las desigualdades sociales, las inequidades sistémicas y la injusticia social. También, fortalecer el trabajo comunitario, como dicen ellos “desde la resistencia, la esperanza y la alegría”.

[CAMs] Virtual Meeting: "From resistance, hope and joy"

In September 2022 we received the stroke of Hurricane Fiona in Puerto Rico. Once again, the Fondo ADELANTE Puerto Rico (Fondo ADELANTE)) led by Filantropía Puerto Rico was present in Puerto Rico’s disaster response and recovery. We recognize that today’s mobilization dates back to long before 2017, and we remain committed to moving towards a better and stronger Puerto Rico.

The Fondo ADELANTE has spent the last five years supporting key non-profit organizations in the social sector and innovative projects that advocate to address crises equitably while increasing the resilience of vulnerable populations on the island. To continue with this purpose, Ten Centro de apoyo mutuo (CAMs) were intentionally selected to receive this unrestricted grant, particularly for their vision of advancing equity in Puerto Rico through self-management and mutual support.

On March 1, 2023, from Filantropía PR, we opened a virtual space to continue strengthening relationships between CAMs and to continue learning how this grant has supported organizations. The main intention was to be able to listen, learn, build trust and share the work that each of the participating organizations had achieved for equity and social justice from their communities.

Those who attended on behalf of each of the organizations, which support 9 Centros de apoyo mutuo (CAMs) in 8 municipalities of Puerto Rico, surprised us with the progress of their work. The conversation sprang up around this premise: “Tell us about an unexpected achievement for CAM that occurred in the past three months. What happened that you did not think was going to be achieved but could be carried out? These were some of their responses:

  • CAM Las Carolinas in Caguas: They were able to advance rehabilitation work on their infrastructure and expand the number of people they serve.
  • Comedores Sociales (CAM Caguas Pueblo): They managed to legally obtain the building where their center is located.
  • Mujeres bartoleñas (CAM Jíbaro Bartolo in Lares): They rehabilitated the housing spaces of the women they serve.
  • CAM Jíbaro de Lares: They bought a vehicle to support the farmers and sewing machines to vindicate the sewing tradition of the women they serve.
  • CAM Bucarabones in Las Marías: They expanded their offer of services to the Las Marías schools and added photography workshops to their offerings.
  • Comité Desarrollo Villa Cañona (CAM Villa Cañona in Loíza): They set up a new space for their Community Technology Center and finished the community kitchen for their Center.
  • Apoyo mutuo agrícola: They started an agromercado in the town of Río Piedras as part of their collaborative effort to revitalize the urban area and to sell agricultural products from the farms they support in three municipalities in the northwestern area.
  • Iniciativa de Ecodesarrollo de Bahía de Jobos (IDEBAJO in Salinas): They were able to find a space to devise and create new responses to face upcoming disasters in their community.
  • Asociación de Comunidades Unidas a Través de la Acción Solidaria (ACUTAS in Toa Baja): They expanded their resilience plan for the four communities they serve.

This virtual meeting helped to recognize the tireless work that each of these organizations and individuals carry out day after day. Now we have to continue reflecting on how to face social inequalities, systemic inequities and social injustice. Also, to strengthen community work, as they say “from resistance, hope and joy”.
