Impact of the FORWARD Puerto Rico FUND

Centro de Periodismo Investigativo

Raising awareness on what was happening in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria: the lack of drinking water, resources, communication, and food, among others, was what made the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo (CPI) an established source of credibility and transparency during the ongoing crisis that Puerto Rico faced in the aftermath of the hurricane. CPI has conducted multiple investigations and projects focused on the island’s recovery process. The FORWARD Fund was able to support the permanent project called, “Promoting Access to Information and Transparency,” better known as “Los Chavos de María,” whose purpose was to oversee the recovery process in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

The Forward FUND also helped establish a permanent task force to oversee the use of funds and the recovery process. Los Chavos de María sheds light on all of the stories, databases, documents and maps that CPI manages and researches in the Island, including local and federal government, municipalities and non-profit organizations that receive recovery funds.

Additionally, the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo won the 2021 Best Website Award for “Los Chavos de María”, a project funded by the FORWARD Fund. Visit and learn more about this outstanding project Los Chavos de María that continues to raise awareness of the crisis in Puerto Rico.
