Robusteciendo la Justicia Social
RJS: ¡Lo que aprendimos en el primer año!
Ha pasado casi un año desde que comenzamos el proyecto de Robusteciendo la Justicia Social, con siete organizaciones uniéndose como cohorte para encontrar formas de abordar los desafíos más importantes y apremiantes de Puerto Rico. Este frente unido ha cambiado y evolucionado desde la primera vez que se reunieron en marzo de 2022. ¡Con la última reunión del año a la vuelta de la esquina, el equipo de Filantropía Puerto Rico reflexiona sobre el progreso del cohorte!
Durante nuestra primera reunión, el grupo estableció que algunas de las palabras clave a tener en cuenta durante las reuniones eran: conectar, aprender, alinear, intercambiar, apoyar, colaborar y construir estrategias unificadas. Para lograr esto, era importante que cada miembro del cohorte conociera mejor a las otras organizaciones, cuáles eran sus enfoques y qué estaban haciendo para lograrlos. Otro aspecto importante de la primera reunión era que la primera vez que estábamos todos juntos en una sala: las siete organizaciones, El Enjambre (facilitadores), así como el equipo de FiPR. Al final, llegamos a la conclusión de que “las raíces de estas siete organizaciones solo se fortalecerán y, con suerte, se entrelazarán como comunidad para alimentar el árbol (Puerto Rico) y brindar frutos que encenderán la justicia social que todos queremos vivir .”
Ahora que los miembros del cohorte se conocían, era hora de comenzar a abordar cómo el cohorte iba a interactuar entre sí para producir resultados exitosos. Al comenzar el proyecto, sabíamos que sería difícil lograr la participación constante y sostenida de todos los miembros del grupo, por lo que comenzamos la segunda reunión con la siguiente pregunta: ¿Cuáles fueron los desafíos internos y externos que enfrentaron los miembros de la cohorte en para alcanzar sus metas? Con base en esta discusión, el cohorte acordó formar un Banco de Assets, donde todos pudieran ver lo que las otras organizaciones tenían para ofrecer y encontrar espacios de apoyo entre ellos. Esto ayudó a crear más confianza y entendimiento entre ellos, algo que nosotros en el equipo de FiPR queríamos mantener.
El propósito y el enfoque de la tercera reunión del cohorte fue profundizar en los problemas, desafíos y obstáculos que el cohorte quería enfrentar como un frente unido. Algunos de los temas que surgieron fueron:
- Desinformación y transparencia
- Burocracia
- Desigualdades sociales
- Inversores extranjeros (capitalistas)
- Toma de decisiones sin el aporte de los líderes comunitarios
- Inserción de las necesidades de las organizaciones en los planes de reconstrucción de la isla
- Desconexión entre el gobierno y el pueblo.
- Capitalismo
- Complejidad de intereses económicos
Nos emocionó ver el entusiasmo del cohorte, así como la forma en que abordan ciertas estrategias y temas que todos consideraron importantes abordar. Una de las cosas que notamos a medida que avanzaba el cohorte fue la pasión y disposición de estas organizaciones para trabajar y construir un mejor Puerto Rico, cada uno desde sus respectivos frentes.
¿Qué buscamos en 2023?
¡Estamos muy satisfechos con el progreso que el cohorte ha logrado hasta ahora y estamos emocionados de ver lo que les espera en el 2023 a este grupo! Por nuestra parte, buscamos seguir brindando espacios para que estas organizaciones crezcan y amplíen su impacto. Al igual que este año, durante el 2023 también queremos continuar con los Charging Stations, que son parte fundamental de nuestro proceso de grants, ya sea en esta iniciativa o en cualquier otro proyecto en el que colaboremos con los grantees. El nombre “Charging Station” surge de la idea de que es un espacio para recargar energías y reenfocar nuestros esfuerzos para lograr nuestro objetivo común. También son nuestra oportunidad de conectarnos más de cerca con la organización, escuchar profundamente para comprender sus desafíos y luchas, y encontrar formas de apoyar su trabajo. Con los recursos y talleres brindados, queremos impulsar un espacio para que las organizaciones evolucionen, amplíen su visión y co-creen iniciativas y proyectos en conjunto, como ya sucedió con algunas de ellas.
Queremos seguir facilitadores que sustentan espacios de crecimiento, empoderamiento, resiliencia y sostenibilidad; donde podamos co-crear y reimaginar el Puerto Rico que nos merecemos. ¡Nuestro compromiso con esta iniciativa es inquebrantable y esperamos un nuevo año lleno de experiencias y aprendizajes!
RJS: What we learned in our first year!
It’s been almost a year since we started the Robusteciendo la Justicia Social project, with seven organizations coming together as a cohort to find ways to tackle Puerto Rico’s most important and pressing challenges. This united front has changed and evolved from the first time they met in March 2022. With the last cohort meeting of the year just around the corner, the Filantropía Puerto Rico team reflects on the progress of the cohort!
During our first cohort meeting, the group established that some of the key words to keep in mind during the meetings were connecting, learning, aligning, exchanging, supporting, collaborating and building unified strategies. To achieve this, it was important that each cohort member knew the other organizations better, what their focuses were, and what they did to achieve them. Another important aspect of the first cohort meeting was that it was the first time we were all together in one room: all seven organizations, El Enjambre (facilitators), as well as the FiPR team. In the end, we came to the conclusion that “the roots of these seven organizations will only grow stronger and will hopefully intertwine as a community to feed the tree (Puerto Rico) and provide fruits that will ignite the social justice we all want to live.”
Now that the cohort members knew each other, it was time to start addressing how the cohort was going to interact with each other in order to produce successful results. Coming into the project, we knew that consistent and sustained participation from everyone in the group was going to be hard to achieve, which is why we started the second meeting with the following question: What were the internal and external challenges that cohort members faced in order to reach their goals? Based on this discussion, the cohort agreed to form an Asset Bank, where everyone could see what the other organizations had to offer and find spaces for support between each other. This helped to create more trust and understanding between them, which is something that us at the FiPR team wanted to sustain.
The purpose and focus of the third cohort meeting was to go in deeper into the issues, challenges and obstacles the cohort wanted to tackle as a united front. Some of the topics that came up were:
- Misinformation and transparency
- Bureaucracy
- Social inequities
- Foreign investors (capitalists)
- Decision making without the input of community leaders
- Inserting organizations’ needs into the plans of the island’s reconstruction
- Disconnection between government and the people.
- Capitalism
- Complexity of economic interests
We were excited to see the enthusiasm of the cohort, as well as how they address certain strategies and topics that everyone felt were important to address. One of the things we noticed as the cohort progressed was the passion and willingness of these organizations to work and build a better Puerto Rico, everyone from their respective fronts.
What do we look for in 2023?
We are very pleased with the progress the cohort has achieved so far, and are excited to see what 2023 holds for this group! From our part, we look to continue to provide spaces for these organizations to grow and expand their impact. As we did this year, during 2023 we also want to continue with the Charging Stations, which are an essential part of our grant process, whether in this initiative or in any other project in which we collaborate with grantees. The name “Charging Station” comes from the idea that it is a space to recharge energies and refocus our efforts to achieve our common goal. They are also our opportunity to connect more closely with the grantee, listen deeply to understand their challenges and struggles, and find ways to support their work. With the resources and workshops provided, we want to drive space for organizations to evolve, expand their vision and co-create initiatives and projects together – as has already happened with some of them.
We want to continue to be a facilitator that sustains spaces for growth, empowerment, resilience and sustainability; where we can co-create and re-imagine the Puerto Rico we deserve. Our commitment to this initiative is unwavering, and we look forward to a new year full of experiences and learning!
