Data: Impact Areas Report

Learn and explore the impact areas in which funders and nonprofits organizations focus and seek to make an impact.

As part of our mission to sustain the social ecosystem and strategic social investments in Puerto Rico, we generate, aggregate, and disseminate data to support philanthropy in addressing the challenges and opportunities in Puerto Rico.

To achieve this, we seek to:

  • have a shared context of the impact areas of the social sector.
  • know the impact areas that are currently being worked on through funders and nonprofit organizations.
  • facilitate the data analysis, ensuring consistent and comparable information for future social sector efforts.

We aim to facilitate data connection between funders and nonprofit organizations, promoting greater transparency and alignment in the social ecosystem. Through the collection and sharing of data, we support the social ecosystem in the development of strategies based on solid information, increasing the availability and accessibility of reliable data.

About the report

We analyze the data Filantropía Puerto Rico has collected from funders and nonprofits organizations using our Impact Areas Standardization Tool. We examine which areas are the most and least impacted by funders and nonprofits organization and offer key findings. It should be noted that when an entity selects an impact area, the tool subsequently displays relevant sub-impact areas for further specification. Our analysis is focused on level 1 impact areas.

  • Data is current as of October 10, 2024, 2:00 PM, representing 228 organizations: 14 funders and 214 nonprofits.
  • Data was collected using our Impact Areas Standardization Tool.
  • In the text, we first specify the impact area, then the percentage, followed by the number of funders or nonprofit organizations impacting that area. For the doughnut chart, we start with the impact area, then list the number of nonprofit organizations or funders, followed by the respective percentage.
  • How are percentages calculated?
    • Each organization in the survey had the option to select multiple impact areas. Therefore, the percentages represent the frequency of each impact area’s selection relative to the total number of organizations surveyed.
    • To calculate the percentage for a specific impact area, we divide the number of times that impact area was selected by the total number of organizations in the respective entity type (either funders or non-profit organizations) and then multiply by 100 to convert it into a percentage.
    • In our dataset, the total number of surveyed organizations comprises 14 funders and 214 nonprofit organizations, summing up to 228 organizations in total.

Note: This report does not encompass all funders and nonprofit organizations in Puerto Rico.

Definitions

  • Funders – Any nonprofit corporation or charitable trust that makes grants to organizations, institutions, or individuals.
  • Nonprofit Organizations – Field or community-based organizations that are impacting communities, developing initiatives and/or projects.
  • Impact Areas – Areas in which the entity focuses and seeks to make an impact with its work.

Data Collection Methodology

  • Filantropía Puerto Rico developed the Impact Area Standardization Tool. This tool provides clear impact areas definitions, allowing funders and nonprofit organizations to standardize their respective impact areas. Integrated within this tool is a form (online assessment) that allows entities to select their impact areas and submit the information to Filantropía Puerto Rico. Additionally, as part of the data collection process, Filantropía Puerto Rico also reached out to various nonprofit organizations, assisting them in completing the tool via email, text messages and phone calls to gather their data.

Nonprofits, while involved, show less emphasis here, potentially leaving room for them to increase their advocacy efforts.
    • Human Rights: Nonprofits demonstrate a stronger focus on human rights compared to funders. This indicates that nonprofits are more actively engaged in advocacy and social justice work, which is critical for protecting vulnerable populations and promoting equity. Funders have an opportunity to increase their support in this area to further amplify the work being done by nonprofits.

Statistics of the number of select impact areas:

  1. Narrow Focus:
    • Both funders and nonprofits have a relatively narrow focus, with both groups selecting around 2 to 3 main impact areas on average. This suggests a targeted approach where organizations, whether funders or nonprofits, concentrate on a few key areas of impact.
  2. Average vs. Median:

    • The average and median for both funders and nonprofits are very close, which suggests that there are no extreme outliers significantly influencing the averages. Most organizations, whether they are funders or nonprofits, tend to focus on a small number of main impact areas.
  3. Involvement:

    • Nonprofits, with an average of 2.74, show slightly more involvement across main impact areas compared to funders (2.21). This could reflect the broader operational scope of nonprofits, who might directly engage with more sectors, while funders may strategically target fewer areas.
