Learning Journeys

Learning Journey - The Full Experience

Learning Journeys 2023

This year Filantropía Puerto Rico aligns all its strategic efforts and programs with the aim of advancing equity in Puerto Rico. After last year’s success, where we visited ACUTAS, Caguas Pueblo and Villa Cañona we are continuing our Learning Journeys in 2023. Come join and be curious with us!

As a philanthropic transformational practice, Filantropía Puerto Rico will be organizing these exciting field visits to community projects that will prompt us to discover and broaden our perspectives on equity. We will be using systemic thinking tools to achieve this.

Our travels will take us to see rural projects in marginalized communities that can offer us a different look at what equity could be. On March 23rd we will meet a community group led by women, on June 29th a collective led by queer artists and in late September by youth from a community of color. However, each project works on unexpected topics such as mutual aid, historical memory and nature tourism, respectively.

As part of the Members Experience program, we created these spaces to support philanthropic organizations in their adoption of transformational practices to advance equity for Puerto Rico. In this way, we fulfill our goal of creating valuable and awesome members experiences for you.

The Full Experience

In our visits we will have the opportunity to share the everyday work with community members.  Filantropía has co-created each unique experience with the project leaders and will reimburse their time and materials with a small grant.

On our first visit in March, the women of the Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Las Carolinas in Caguas, will welcome us. They provide mutual aid and care services for the community from a rehabilitated abandoned school. Those of you with interests in alleviating poverty, women issues and housing justice will appreciate this visit.

On our second visit in June, a queer artist collective will invite us to explore their efforts to preserve the material and oral history of Manatí with an urban restoration approach.  They rehabilitated and sustained two historical buildings, a cultural memory archive and a queer centric artist gallery.  Those of you interested in arts and culture, gender issues and will love to learn from these project.

The Learning Practice

It is important to understand that these trips are not a tourist tour but rather a learning opportunity to integrate systems thinking into our philanthropic work. We will follow the MIT’s Presencing Institute model, based on Otto Scharmer’s Theory U, which integrates systems theory, neuroscience, and transformational social tools.

Those who participate will be able to enter as a group in an unknown context to explore and have a personal learning experience with impact on their work. We carefully chose the projects to visit because they provide us a different perspective of the real experiences of communities marginalized by our institutional system.

Throughout the journeys

  • We will learn stories from community leaders and program participants.
  • We will work alongside community members
  • We will share with all participants in a closing celebration with the community.

Philanthropic Practice

As part of the Members Experience program, we created these spaces to support philanthropic organizations in their adoption of transformational practices to advance equity for Puerto Rico. In this way, we fulfill our goal of creating valuable and awesome members experiences for you.

We chose these communities because they represented different opportunities to learn about equity in particular contexts.  Using a systems theory approach, will allow us to experience a deep understanding of these distinct realities that could very well influence future grant programming for our foundations.

Our Learning Journeys are made possible by the 2023 Rural Philanthropy Mini Grants from the United Philanthropy Forum, which allows us to contribute and have a fair exchange with the rural communities we will visit. You can see the highlights of all three visits we made last year here,
