FORWARD Puerto Rico Fund
The FORWARD Puerto Rico Fund is a philanthropic-strategic investment tool to mobilize money for systemic changes that promote equity in Puerto Rico. In the last 6 years, the FORWARD Fund raised $9,959,706.54 and has impacted 111 unique community organizations. This fund has also made it possible to have strategic conversations with the philanthropic ecosystem to expand their impact and find solutions collectively.
During 2023, we highlight two initiatives that have sustained infrastructures for mutual support across the island and for the fiscal health of the organizations.
Mutual Aid Infrastructure
During Hurricane Fiona emergency in 2022, we were able to support those who are supporting Puerto Rico in an equitable way for over a year. We distributed $720,000 in 10 grants to Centros de Apoyo Mutuo across Puerto Rico. These community-based organizations are focusing their efforts on agriculture, agroecology, community economic development, food security, addressing the housing crisis, serving as community shelters, among other critical services for the community.
Fiscal Infrastructure
For 5 years, the Emergency Reserve Fund supported 12 organizations under an unrestricted financial grant aimed at providing stability during an emergency. This Fund was very unusual and innovative because it provided permanent financial resources to support the operational work of the organizations to give them the security to continue their mission regardless of any crisis.
Robusteciendo la Justicia Social
Since the beginning of this three-year grants in 2021, this initiative supports an infrastructure that expands and strengthens seven community-based organizations that mobilize systemic change and equity on issues related to: housing, recovery, land use, environment, governance, transparency and civic engagement. As we enter the final year of this cohort, we are going deeper into identifying tools, resources and assets that will enhance the work they do as a collective.
Compromisos para una Recuperación Justa
Through this initiative we convene public entities and non-profit organizations to collaborate on a pathway to ensure equitable access to recovery funds. We identified areas of growth for 2024 and look forward to continuing holding this space to advance equity within recovery efforts on the island.
Webinars and Conversatorios
Throughout the year we seek to expand knowledge, bring in leading experts on topics relevant to the sector and have data-driven, evidence-based conversations to make informed, strategic decisions. Check out some of our webinars and “conversatorios”.

Collective Intelligence Initiative
This year we continued growing and developing our efforts to become the main resource hub for the philanthropic sector. As part of these efforts, we soft launched some components of our Collective Intelligence initiative, which is an effort dedicated to collecting data about philanthropic impact, investment, and areas of growth of Puerto Rico. Take a walkthrough to some of our tools and resources.

Impact Areas Standardization Tool
We have also been working strongly on standardizing the areas of impact of organizations and funders in the social sector. The Impact Areas Standardization tool made it possible to simultaneously map the areas of impact with greater investment and those that remain as areas of opportunity. You can learn more about this tool here.
Active Donors Entities 2021 & 2022 Report
We also published a report about the active donors during the past two years to better understand patterns and trends in philanthropic investment on the island. You can learn more about this report here.
