Field Catalyst Lab ("Field Lab”): Diseñando infraestructura para el fortalecimiento de ecosistemas en Puerto Rico
En el Field Catalyst Lab partimos de una idea sencilla, pero intencional: lograr cambios sistémicos requiere algo más que apoyar organizaciones de manera individual. También necesitamos fortalecer las conexiones, capacidades y condiciones que permitan a múltiples actores trabajar articuladamente alrededor de un mismo reto. Esto es precisamente lo que estamos impulsando desde el proyecto piloto junto a Fundación Colibrí y las organizaciones participantes. Durante estos meses de trabajo hemos comenzado a construir algo que todavía es poco común en el sector social: la infraestructura para propiciar una lectura compartida del ecosistema. Durante el proyecto piloto, aspiramos a que las organizaciones comiencen a entenderse, no únicamente como entidades individuales, sino como parte de una red de actores que, desde distintos roles y capacidades, inciden sobre un mismo reto: la educación en Puerto Rico.
Para apoyar este proceso, utilizamos las herramientas Field Building Tool y Systemic Change Tracking Tool de Filantropía Puerto Rico que a través de los datos facilitan conversaciones más estructuradas, permiten visualizar las dinámicas del ecosistema y generan una lectura inicial basada en los atributos clave del marco de field building.
Esto ha permitido que, durante los espacios de cohorte, los distintos actores comiencen a identificar retos, capacidades, oportunidades y brechas desde una mirada más amplia y conectada. También ha contribuido a desarrollar una comprensión más clara sobre cómo funciona un ecosistema y cuáles son las condiciones necesarias para sostener el cambio sistémico a largo plazo para la educación en Puerto Rico.
A partir de este ejercicio, las organizaciones pudieron analizar de manera agregada los datos recopilados a través del Field Building Tool y contrastarlos con el panorama inicial (landscape) construido por las mismas organizaciones. Esto permitió identificar patrones, fortalezas, oportunidades y brechas estructurales que muchas veces no son visibles cuando cada organización observa únicamente su propio trabajo. Este proceso también busca transformar cómo el sector social usa y percibe los datos. Más allá de verlos como requisitos de reporte, buscamos promover una cultura donde los datos funcionen como una herramienta para estrategizar, aprender, tomar decisiones más coordinadas y basadas en evidencia.
Como parte de nuestros objetivos, buscamos fortalecer el desarrollo de ecosistemas como práctica filantrópica dentro del sector social de Puerto Rico. Para lograrlo, es fundamental continuar fortaleciendo relaciones basadas en confianza, aprendizaje y visión a largo plazo, donde el foco no esté únicamente en apoyar esfuerzos aislados, sino en crear las condiciones necesarias para sostener cambios sistémicos. Esto también implica avanzar hacia un lenguaje compartido, marcos comunes de medición y una mayor capacidad del sector para comprender y evaluar su progreso como ecosistema.
Field Catalyst Lab ("Field Lab"): Cohort #1 – Strengthening the Infrastructure for Systemic Change
At the Field Catalyst Lab, we started with a simple yet intentional idea: achieving systemic change requires more than supporting individual organizations. It also requires strengthening the connections, capacities and conditions that enable multiple actors to work in coordination around a common issue. This is precisely what we are advancing through the pilot project alongside Fundación Colibrí and the participating organizations. Over the past several months, we have begun building something that is still uncommon in the social sector: the infrastructure to foster a shared understanding of the field. Throughout the pilot project, we aspire for organizations to begin understanding themselves not only as individual entities, but as part of a network of actors that, from different roles and capacities, are contributing to the same challenge: education in Puerto Rico.
To support this process, we use Filantropía Puerto Rico’s Field Building Tool and Systemic Change Tracking Tool, which leverage data to facilitate more structured conversations, help visualize field dynamics and generate an initial assessment based on the key attributes of the field-building framework.
This has allowed different actors, throughout the cohort sessions, to begin identifying challenges, capacities, opportunities and gaps through a broader and more connected lens. It has also contributed to developing a clearer understanding of how a field functions and the conditions necessary to sustain long-term systemic change for education in Puerto Rico.
As a result of this exercise, organizations were able to analyze, in aggregate, the data collected through the Field Building Tool and compare it against the initial landscape developed by the organizations themselves. This made it possible to identify patterns, strengths, opportunities and structural gaps that are often not visible when each organization looks only at its own work. This process also seeks to transform how the social sector uses and perceives data. Rather than viewing data as a reporting requirement, we seek to promote a culture where data serves as a tool for strategic thinking, learning and making more coordinated, evidence-based decisions.
As part of our goals, we seek to strengthen field development as a philanthropic practice within Puerto Rico’s social sector. To achieve this, it is essential to continue strengthening relationships grounded in trust, learning and a long-term vision, where the focus is not solely on supporting isolated efforts, but on creating the conditions necessary to sustain systemic change. This also involves advancing toward a shared language, common measurement frameworks and a greater capacity within the sector to understand and assess its progress as a field.
