RJS: Fifth Cohort Meeting

El 2023 comenzó con la quinta reunión de comunidad de práctica en Fundación Banco Popular en San Juan. ¡Sííí! Seis de las siete organizaciones participantes, Sembrando Sentido, Liga de Ciudades, FURIA, UPR Resiliency Law Center, Centro para la Reconstrucción de la Hábitat y Fideicomiso del Caño Martín Peña comenzaron respondiendo, ¿qué palabra resume tu 2022 como organización? Algunas de estas fueron: estabilización, crecimiento, evolución, expansión, orden, estructura y solidificación. Asimismo, abordaron de manera individual, ¿qué les mueve este 2023, qué les motiva y cuál es su enfoque? Mientras realizaban este ejercicio, los integrantes de cada organización pasaron al frente y explicaron cada uno de sus sticky notes:

Nos mueve la injusticia y nos motiva aprender.
Nos mueve el crecimiento y nuestro enfoque es la transición.
Nos motiva la transformación.
Nos motiva el amor a la patria y nuestro enfoque está en ser estratégicos.
Nos motiva la necesidad de cambio sistémico y la fortaleza de las personas con las que se trabaja.
Nos motiva la seguridad y la permanencia de nuestra gente.
Nos motiva la esperanza radical.

Con este ejercicio, la iniciativa de RJS de tres años (2022-2024), inició su segundo año de subvención. Lyvia y Alejandro de El Enjambre, facilitadores del cohorte, dieron paso a una dinámica grupal en donde debían identificar qué tema de país les interesaba abordar, a qué se debía esa problemática, cuáles eran los principales retos y las oportunidades existentes. El tema escogido fue “desplazamiento”. Algunos de los retos para abordar el desplazamiento fue, “lo urgente no deja tiempo para lo importante o que los funders no tienden a subvencionar lo sistémico“. Algunas de las oportunidades se concentraron en “unificar esfuerzos para un mayor poder político y colaboraciones innovadoras”. Para profundizar mejor en estas premisas, El Enjambre dividió a los grupos en dos: (a) ejecutivos y (b) operaciones. Cada grupo tuvo la tarea de abordar con más profundidad estas preguntas y de presentar al final una propuesta viable. Este espacio fue esencial para que ambos grupos pudieran conocer, contrastar, retar y abordar temáticas similares con otros colegas.

Continuaron las dinámicas dividiendo a los participantes por organizaciones. En este espacio, se puntualizaron las siguientes premisas por grupo: identificar un reto, cuál es su trasfondo, explicar y/o describir lo que han intentado para abordarlo y cuál es la oportunidad existente. Luego de este ejercicio exhaustivo individual por organización, las seis organizaciones participantes se intercambiaron para darse retroalimentación entre ellas sobre los retos y oportunidades que delinearon. Esta oportunidad de escuchar, recibir retroalimentación, aprender de los trasfondos y expectativas de las demás organizaciones es invaluable y aporta un valor increíble al crecimiento de la comunidad. Parte de las reflexiones de los participantes sobre este ejercicio fue: “muy valioso ver y escuchar desde diferentes perspectivas, este ejercicio de insumo abierto continúa generando confianza, es un espacio seguro para hablar claro y seguir ideando, repensando y reflexionando”.

Desde Filantropía Puerto Rico, asumimos nuestra misión de posibilitar y sostener espacios en donde el sector social tenga la oportunidad de idear, crear, estrategizar, colaborar, intercambiar, escuchar y aprender sobre diversas prácticas que continúen movilizando y avanzando equidad. Durante el primer año de subvención, la comunidad de práctica de RJS tuvo la oportunidad de conocerse, adentrarse en lo que cada uno hace y poder verse y escucharse desde otra perspectiva. Este 2023 queremos continuar expandiéndonos como cohorte, estrechando lazos, aprendiendo a escucharnos y a aunar esfuerzos. ¡Vamos con todo y estamos listxs para recibir todo lo que viene!

RJS: Fifth Cohort Meeting

This year 2023 we began with the fifth community of practice meeting at Fundación Banco Popular in San Juan. Hooray! Six of the seven participating organizations, Sembrando Sentido, Liga de Ciudades, FURIA, UPR Resiliency Law Center, Center for the Reconstruction of the Habitat and Fideicomiso del Caño Martín Peña began by answering, what word defined your 2022 as an organization? Some of these were: growth, evolution, expansion, order, structure and solidification. Likewise, they addressed individually, what moves them this 2023, what motivates them and what is their focus? While doing this exercise, members of each organization came forward and explained each of their sticky notes:

We are moved by injustice and motivated to learn.
We are driven by growth and our focus is transition.
We are motivated by transformation.
We are motivated by love of country and our focus is on being strategic.
We are motivated by the need for systemic change and the strength of the people with whom we work.
We are motivated by the safety and permanence of our people.
We are motivated by radical hope.

With this exercise, RJS’s three-year (2022-2024) initiative began its second grant year. El Enjambre, facilitators of the cohort, gave way to a group dynamic where they must identify which issue in the country they were interested in addressing, what caused this problem, the characteristics of the main challenges and the existing opportunities. The theme chosen was “displacement”. Some of the challenges in addressing displacement were, “the urgent doesn’t leave time for the important or that funders don’t tend to subsidize the systemic.” Some of the opportunities focused on “joining efforts for greater political power and innovative collaborations.” To better delve into these premises, El Enjambre divided the groups into two: (a) executives and (b) operations. Each group was tasked with further addressing these questions and ultimately presenting a viable proposal. This space was essential so that both groups could meet, compare, retake and address similar issues with other colleagues.

Some of the words used to describe facilitation were:

Co-Creation

From this, the group concluded that facilitation is based on teamwork and benefits from diversity. Also, it was pointed out that structure and streamlined processes are also important factors. After this dynamic, cohort members shared their success of 2022 and what they could offer in 2023:

The dynamics continued dividing the participants by organizations. In this space, the following premises were specified by group: identify a challenge, what is its background, explain and/or describe what they have tried to address it and what is the existing opportunity. Following this in-depth individual organization-by-organization exercise, the six participating organizations exchanged feedback to each other on the challenges and opportunities they outlined. This opportunity to listen, receive feedback, learn about the backgrounds and expectations of other organizations is invaluable and brings incredible value to the growth of the community. Part of the reflections of the participants on this exercise was: “very valuable to see and listen from different perspectives, this open input exercise continues to build trust, it is a safe space to speak clearly and continue to devise, rethink and reflect.”

From Filantropía Puerto Rico, we assume our mission of enabling and sustaining spaces where the social sector has the opportunity to devise, create, strategize, collaborate, exchange, listen and learn about various practices that continue to mobilize and advance equity. During the past year 2022, the RJS community of practice had the opportunity to get to know each other, delve into what each one does and be able to see and hear each other from another perspective. This 2023 we want to continue expanding as a cohort, strengthening ties, learning to listen to each other and joining efforts. Let’s go with everything and we are ready to receive everything that comes!
